How Often Should an Automatic Watch Be Serviced?

An automatic watch usually needs servicing every 5 to 10 years. The right interval depends on the brand, the model and how the watch is used, so the manufacturer's manual is the first place to check.

Why does a watch need servicing?

The parts inside a movement are always moving and run on fine oils. Over time those oils dry out or get dirty, friction rises and parts start to wear. A watch can keep running while this happens, so servicing is prevention, not only a repair.

Signs that it is time

Book a check if the watch runs noticeably fast or slow, the power reserve gets shorter, the crown feels stiff, or you see condensation under the crystal. A check also makes sense after a knock or contact with water. Condensation matters most, because moisture can cause rust quickly.

What happens during a service?

In a full service the watch is opened, the movement is dismantled and cleaned, parts are inspected and replaced where needed, then it is lubricated and regulated. A water-resistance test usually follows.

The Guven Watches service team handles ultrasonic cleaning, water-resistance testing, and dial and strap changes. Items serviced by our team are guaranteed for one year.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watch that runs well still need servicing?

Yes. Oils can degrade even in a watch that keeps good time. Following the manufacturer's interval helps reduce wear later.

Does an unworn watch need servicing?

Yes. Oils can also lose their properties in a watch that sits unused, so wind it regularly and have it checked from time to time.
